In this ongoing reading and clinical seminar — now in its third year, with 50-55 participants each cycle — we consider Sándor Ferenczi's groundbreaking work on countertransference and its uses in the therapeutic situation. The Clinical Diary serves as our anchoring text, read in its entirety alongside works by Ferenczi, Groddeck, Severn, Bromberg, Davies, Winnicott, and Balint.New members are always welcome and will have the opportunity to read the Clinical Diary in depth alongside those who have studied the text before.

Since 2008, Dr. Bass has returned to Rome almost every other year as the international guest of ISIPSÉ, the Institute of Self Psychology and Relational Psychoanalysis — a sustained dialogue with Italian colleagues on mutuality, unconscious communication, and the therapy relationship.
BIOGRAPHY
Four decadesat the frontier
Anthony Bass, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst, and one of the architects of contemporary relational psychoanalysis in the United States.
His work is grounded in a lifetime of inquiry into the bidirectional, deeply mutual nature of the analytic relationship — work that traces its lineage to Sándor Ferenczi’s radical experiments in psychoanalytic technique, and extends them into the present through the application of rigorous relational clinical theory.
He trained at the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, where he studied with Stephen Mitchell, Philip Bromberg and Emmanuel Ghent. He holds a Ph.D., M.Phil., and M.S. from Columbia University and an M.A. from Harvard. He also studied child and family therapy at the California Graduate School of Family and Child Therapy, and Ericksonian hypnosis and strategic therapies at the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto.
For twelve years he served as Editor in Chief of Psychoanalytic Dialogues: The International Journal of Relational Perspectives, the field’s leading journal, which he helped found. He lectures and leads workshops throughout North America, South America, Europe, Eastern Europe, Israel, and Australia, receiving many invitations each year to speak at institutes and professional organizations worldwide.
He is in private practice in New York City.
